Grace Estes (Henderson)

About  a year or so ago, perhaps a bit longer, I was making arrangements for a photo shoot at The Edwardian Inn in Helena AR, among the finest bed and breakfast inns in the South. One of the guests came out of her room and was talking near me to another person. I had my back to the ladies, but the voice stopped me in my tracks. I'd not heard that voice since my family moved from Greenville in l960, but I knew it!

I turned around and looked at the woman who was vaguely familiar and waited until she finished her conversation. The more she talked, the more positive it became to me that I knew her.

I walked up to her and said, "Excuse me, m'am, but are you Rae Weiner?" She said that she was and did she know me?  Yes, m'am. I spent countless nights at your house with your Judy. I was Grace Estes.

She began to cry and so did I. We talked for a bit and I missed Judy even more than I had when she died so many years ago at such a young age. She may not have even been 30 at her death. Judy's father, Bert, was originally from Helena and was manager of Chicago Mill, moving to Greenville to manage the facility there.

You never know what the day holds, do you?  That day was a joyous one for me.

Judy was one of my best friends in high school.  As were Lynda Nelken and Paula  Griffith.  Those sweet, sweet days of high school seem so long ago, and yet those memories will always be a part of me.  I think of those friends with a tear in my eye and a smile on my face.  Thanks for the memory, Grace.
